How to crochet a Poppy Flower
The Poppy is one of my favorite flowers. The pattern for this Poppy is easy and you will have fun to make it.
I used for my Poppy Schachenmayr Bravo Acrylic Yarn with a 3.50 mm Hook.
for the Petals: Ruby
for the Center: Black
for the Stem: Fern
Flower Petals in Ruby Red:
Chain 6 with your red yarn. Insert your hook in your first chain you made and Slip Stitch to form a loop.
Round 1: chain 1, then work 5 times (1 sc and chain 5) in your loop, end your round with a Slip Stitch in your first sc you made
Round 2: make 1 Slip Stitch in your first little loop chain 4, then work 10 tr, chain 4 and 1 Slip Stitch, – you worked all this Stitches in your first loop and you have done your first Poppy Petal.
Now you have to repeat this pattern for the Poppy Petals 4 times till you have a total of 5 Petals.
(Slip Stitch in your next loop, chain 4, 10 tr, chain 4 ……)
End your round with a Slip Stitch.
Round 3: 1 Slip Stitch in your first chain of your first Flower Petal. chain 3, 1 dc in each of your tr (= 10 dc), chain 3, 1 Slip Stitch in your last chain of your first Flower Petal.
Repeat this pattern with each Flower Petal (4 times) end your round with a Slip Stitch and fasten off.
Center in Black:
Chain 2 with your black yarn.
Round 1: work 6 sc in your second chain from your hook, end your round with a Slip Stitch (=6)
Round 2: chain 1, 2 sc in each sc, end your round with a Slip Stitch (=12)
Round 3: chain 3, 1 tc in your first sc, then work in each sc 2 tc, end your round with a Slip Stitch and fasten off (=24)
Lay your black center under your red petals and pull it through the center opening of the petals. Sew with the yarn.
Leaf in Green:
Chain 6 with your green yarn and work 5 sc – this will be your stem for your leaf.
1 Row: chain 1, then work 3 sc in your last sc you made, (=3), chain 1 and turn,
2 Row: 2 sc in your first sc, 1 sc, 2 sc in your last sc, (=5), chain 1 and turn,
3 Row: work 5 sc (=5), chain 1 and turn,
4 Row: 1 sc, 2 sc in one stich, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1 stitch, 1 sc, (=7), chain 1 and turn.
5 Row: work 7 sc (=7), chain 1 and turn,
6 Row: 1 sc, sc 2 stitches together, 1 sc, sc 2 stitches together, 1 sc, (=5), chain 1 and turn,
7 Row: work 5 sc (=5), chain 1 and turn
8 Row: sc 2 stitches together, 1 sc, sc 2 stitches together, (=3), chain 1 and turn,
9 Row: work 3 sc (=3), chain 1 and turn
10 Row: sc 3 stitches together and fasten off.
And you have done your first Poppy Flower !!
That was not so hard and it was fun to make!
Great pattern – thanks. My beginners have asked me to teach them how to make a poppy, and so far they only know chain and double crochet (your single). If I use your petals, and maybe use felt for the leaves, that should be simple enough for them, and looks very effective – I love the look of those chain loops in the centre with the black showing through them!
Thank you 🙂 …. Would love to see a picture of your Poppy Flower
Can you explain what the abbreviation sc is in crochet terms. Thank you
Hello …. sc means single crochet … I hope it will help you
And that’s American terminology – in UK or Australian, it’s a double crochet. (And the “dc” is an American “double crochet”, triple everywhere else, etc. Basically, add one, if you’re anywhere other than America)
